Neumann Microphones are the most sought after studio microphones on the planet. The Neumann U87 is arguably the most popular of them all, with its crystal clear tone, and versatility across all genres of music, it’s easy to see why this mic has been around for generations.
This large diaphragm condenser is equipped with three switchable polar patterns, Classic Cardioid, Figure-8, and Omni-Directional. Pattern switching is easily accessible by the switch on the front of the casing.
For more aggressive sources, a 10 dB switch is included, and will allow up to 127 dB of dynamic range without any distortion. This feature along with the Omni-Directional polar pattern is what makes it great for a loud vocal, or guitar performance. A high-pass filter is also included to compensate for proximity effect.
The letter “A” indicates a more recent generation of microphone, modifications apply to the electronic components of the microphone only; the capsule remained unchanged. The “A” circuitry increases the headroom by supplying the bias voltages for the capsule through a reduced resistance. This improves the signal to noise ratio by 3 dB, and a higher sensitivity of 10 dB for identical sound pressure levels.
